Scope and standards of psychiatric mental health nursing practice reflection paper

Read the scope and standards and Identify 3 standards in the document that you believe are critical as a future advanced practice registered nurse. Why?

Having read the document on the scope and standards of psychiatric/mental health nursing practice (PMHNP), three standards were identified as critical to advance practice registered nurses. The first standard is education as nurses must continue to receive advanced education at successive levels as this provides them with a better understand of nursing care management as well as the associated experiences. In addition, education provides nurses with a better understanding of and experience in systems-level change management and quality improvement methods. Besides that, education allows nurses to better fit in their re-conceptualized roles within reformed health care systems. Besides that, as PMHNP advance their education, they learn how to make better health care decisions, thereby helping in achieving optimized operational efficiency, reduced costs and better patient outcomes (Zaccagnini & White, 2017). Furthermore, advanced levels of education allow PMHNPs to be more involved in public health endeavors, particularly in health promotion, disease prevention and treatment alignment with the nursing goals of delivering holistic, person-centered care. Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing Practice Reflection Paper  Through education, PMHNP gain the competence and qualifications to be certified to engage in more steps in integrated care delivery, rather than taking on a reduced role that restricts their responsibilities and activities. Also, it allows nurses to advance nursing science and practice with regards to building on the available knowledge and changing circumstances to present new theories and understandings (Butt & Rich, 2018).

The second standard is ethics as PMHNP actions are guided by established foundational moral principles. Considering the various issues that are involved in mental disorders and research, ethical plays a critical role in ensuring that the rights of patients are protected even as the interests of other stakeholders (such as nursing practitioners and researchers) is safeguarded. In essence, ethical guidelines help to maintain accountability and transparency in PMHNP practice and research (Grace, 2018). Besides that, ethical serves an important function in helping PMHNP to recognize healthcare dilemmas, make good moral judgements in professional practice, and ensure that the decisions made are based on clear values while being restricted within the laws that govern PMHNP practice and research. With a good understanding of ethics, a PMHNP is able to focus on the patients, while working within a framework that ensures the safety of the patients and other stakeholders. At its core, ethics focuses PMHNP efforts on the patients, guaranteeing that they are provided with compassionate care even as suffering is eased or prevented. Overall, ethics introduces a dimension to help PMHNP make decisions that focus on the good of the patient even as disputes are resolved through fair and logical decisions (DeNisco, 2020).

The third standard is evidence-based practice (EBP). The concept of EBP is significant to PMHNP when it is considered that the focus of nursing practice is the patients. With EBP, PMHNP are able to make data-backed decisions that take into account past evidence of related situations as well as the preferences. For instance, EBP can help the PMHNP to make a data-backed diagnosis that takes into account past evidence of similar combinations of symptoms and the patient preference for treatment. This makes it clear that EBP enables nurses to provide the most effective care that is available even as they improve care outcomes for the patients. Additionally, EBP helps to improve the efficiency of nurses with regards to resource use. Within a health care environment where resources – such as money, time and medical personnel – are finite, PMHNP are faced with the pressure of ensuring that the available resources are used wisely. Towards this end, applying EBP in considering the relevant evidence ensures that resources are used efficiently (Ervin & Kulbok, 2018). In this respect, education, ethics and EBP are three standards that are critical to future PMHNP.
