Method of Evaluation

Written Assignments: Students will be required to complete two papers during the 8 week module. Your first paper is due at the end of Unit 4 and the second paper is due at the end of Unit 7. Rubrics will be used to grade your work. Psychology Relationship Between Social Structures Assignments should be written in the format of the most current edition of the APA manual. Each paper must be submitted via Blackboard (Safe assign link in unit) and emailed copies will not be accepted. Please use a Microsoft Word format to submit papers (no PDFs or other programs please). Policies in regard to turning work in late also apply to these assignments.

Each written assignment will consist of a paper that is at least 6 full pages. Each paper must be double spaced with size 12 Times New Roman font and 1 inch margins on all sides. You will need to follow the example provided under course information and need a title page, body (at least 6 full pages), and reference section all in APA style. Please use complete sentences, appropriate grammar, spelling, and references. You will also be required to use in-text references in your work in accordance with APA style to avoid plagiarism. Please be sure to avoid using internet sources such as Wikipedia or other web-based resources that do not have strong academic backing. You must use at least 3 additional scholarly sources not used in this course. Plagiarism detection software will be used to scan each paper and any paper that is determined to have academic integrity issues will earn a score of 0 automatically.

Possible Paper Topics:

Please pick any of the following topics below for your paper. You can choose 1 for your first assignment and a 2nd for the final paper.

➢ Critique or defend the concept of “we live and always will live in a society of drug use and abuse.” Discuss factors related to this statement and costs involved. Be sure to include aspects of historical overview of the use of drugs throughout history, biopsychosocial model of addiction, as well as medicinal use. ➢ Discuss the relationship between social structures, culture, and the use of substances throughout history. Be sure to include information about the use as medicinal substances, religious rituals, celebratory situations, and use instead of water.

➢ Research has shown that drug use affects the brain and that long term abuse of drugs can destroy brain cells. Discuss how drug use and abuse affect the brain. In explaining your rationale, please use at least 2 drugs of abuse to help demonstrate your statements. You can choose any 2 you desire.

➢ Science has yet to develop a magic pill to cure alcoholism or drug addiction, but there are some drugs that will help reduce cravings and benefit those who are sincerely trying to quit drinking and want treatment for alcoholism or addiction. Please pick at least 3 categories of substances (e.g. opioids) and discuss methods used in the psychopharmacology of treating this substance category. Be sure to discuss the history and development of the method as well as results of initial clinical trials and findings.

➢ In reading recent research, please choose at least 4 drugs (or categories of drugs) that are the most abused in the area of the country in which you live. Please share current trends, as well as past statistics, to help your claims. Please also share at least 2 region-specific reasons why each drugs is abused more so than others based on appropriate sociological demographics in the region.

➢ At times, there is a fine line between “therapeutic use vs. abuse” in terms of prescription medications. In thinking about the difference, please research at least 5 evidence-based means of assessing whether medication(s), taken as prescribed or not, are being abused. It is also important to mention DSM-5 criteria for substance use disorders and to use peer-reviewed medical research in explaining your thoughts.
