Quality improvement projects Essay Example

This week’s content discussed the link between information systems, data collection, and quality improvement. In addition, literature discussing regulatory and reimbursement issues, accreditation, and costs associated with data collection and analysis was presented. Think of a recently conducted quality or process improvement project at your current institution of employment. Then answer the following discussion prompts.

1. Give a brief synopsis of the project.

2. Define what type of data was collected as an outcome measure.
3. Identify the established benchmarks the project was aiming to achieve.

4. Discuss the role of information systems in the data collection process.

5. Identify all the potential costs associated with data collection.

6. Describe the connection between information systems, data collection, quality improvement, regulatory and reimbursement issues, accreditation, and financial management. Quality improvement projects Essay Example

Week 11

The recently conducted quality-improvement project in my organization is the optimization of the sepsis care bundle to improve early detection and outcomes. Sepsis is a major cause of death among patients because prompt identification of sepsis can be a challenge; this delays diagnosis and treatment resulting in increased mortality rates.

Therefore, the organization sought to implement an all-inclusive data-driven strategy to facilitate prompt and early identification of sepsis and standardize sepsis treatment. Using an all-inclusive data-driven strategy, the organization has managed to reduce the mortality rates for patients with sepsis and septic shock and reduce the length of stay in the emergency department (ED) for sepsis patients. Therefore, the outcome data collected as an outcome measure included the mortality rate and the length of stay in the ED for patients with sepsis and septic shock. Reduced mortality rate and length of stay in the ED for this patient population indicates the efficacy of the implemented sepsis care bundle (Verburg et al., 2018).

The health system will continue to use this proven plan to improve sepsis outcomes and enhance care for patients with sepsis and they are laying the groundwork to move the early identification screening tools to the outpatient setting, including urgent care centers and physician offices.

Information systems are used to collect data of patients with sepsis and thus facilitate early identification and treatment. The potential costs associated with the data collection include the equipment and installation costs; compensation costs for the staff involved in data collection; statistical analysis costs, and costs associated with the system administration (Jones et al., 2015).

Quality improvement projects aim to improve the quality of care. Information systems must be implemented to collect data and also operate the quality improvement processes (Jones et al., 2015). Quality improvement projects are part of the regulatory requirement and therefore healthcare organizations are required to continually implement quality improvement projects for accreditation and reimbursement.
