Reflection Paper
Part I
The volunteer experience has presented me with an opportunity to practice the knowledge I gained from the program of study. To be more precise, I have had the opportunity to practice the leadership and management knowledge I acquired in the program. I perceive volunteering as an opportunity to develop new skills in leadership and management since I am faced with new situations. Reflection Example Paper In addition, I get to experience the world in a unique way, unlike what I would have experienced through work. Through the two weeks of volunteering, I have gained a better understanding of the nature of volunteering thus enabling me to not only understand my areas of passion, but also created professional connections, developed new leadership and management skills, and opened doors to opportunities. These are aspects that will help me pursue a fulfilling career. I now understand that the volunteer experience is not just about myself. I am developing my skills through helping others. In a bid to develop strong leadership and management capabilities, volunteering has helped me understand that I cannot have all the answers as an individual, and must rely on working together with other committed and talented persons to achieved expressed goals.
I perceive volunteering as being very helpful for my future. It has helped me to affirm early on that my passion is counseling. In addition, it has helped me to develop connections as I work in diverse teams. These connections will allow me to develop a network that can be tapped as a future resource. Besides that, I have learned new skills from others, and this will make me a more capable and proficient professional. Additionally, I have gained access to further challenging opportunities that I can explore in the future as a pursue professional growth and development.
Part II
The school environment has been very instrumental in facilitating my learning experiences and allowing me to develop as an individual. In fact, I have not only had the opportunity to engage in academic pursuits, but also social and cultural development even as I interact with the school community. The extracurricular activities and faculty have particularly been influential through presenting networking and ‘pseudo-mentoring’ opportunities to gain a better understanding of the ideal career path. Through this areas, I have been able to meet more knowledgeable and experienced persons who have advised me on the ideal career trajectories and how to make efficient and effective use of the school resources to achieve the best outcomes. I now have a clearer idea of what programs and class combinations to pursue in order to achieve my desired career trajectory within the defined timeline. Besides that, the volunteer activities have been a refreshing distraction from the hectic classroom activities. Through volunteering, I now understand what it means to have work responsibilities in my career interests as a counselor. I can evaluate the school environment and volunteer activities as instruments of growth. The school environment allows me to acquire new knowledge and skills while the volunteer activities allow me to apply and adapt the acquired knowledge and skills to real world needs. The whole experience has an influence on my future through improving my knowledge and skill levels as well as professional competencies. In addition, the experience allows me to develop professional networks that will help me in career moves, such as hearing about job opportunities and being recommended to hirers.
Part III
I would summarize my volunteering experience, so far, as life-changing. It is hard to explain my feelings as I engage in self-less acts. I was initially worried and anxious when asked to engaging in volunteering activities as a course completion requirement. I through of what it would mean to put myself out there and get involved in community activities, but there was always the anxiety about whether or not I would be able to make a difference. At least these were my initial thoughts. As I faced the reality of volunteering, I had to contend with the new worry of how to get involved, I did not know how to get started. Choosing to spend my volunteer time with a special needs child learning about his care requirements and the position of a caregiver has been a very impactful experience. This was so, because of the fact that I had never volunteered in such a position until now. My objective was to be fully immersed in the caring culture, an experience that can be taken into the real world. Putting me in an environment where I must ensure that an individual who is dependent on me gets all his medical needs met will benefit me with profound impact. Moreover, it will broaden my perspective and help shape by abilities. So far, the volunteer experience has forced me to do some self-evaluation and self-assessment as far as my weaknesses, strength and the environment that would allow me to thrive as a counselor. In fact, the experience has connected me with the required skills I will practice throughout my careers as a counselor, therefore better preparing me for assisting clients who may be dependent on my services.
