Raipuria, H. D., Lovett, B., Lucas, L., & Hughes, V. (2018). A Literature Review of Midwifery-Led Care in Reducing Labor and Birth Interventions. Nursing for Women’s Health, 22(5), 387-400. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.nwh.2018.07.002

Raipuria et al. (2018) explores the position that certified nurse-midwives play reducing labor and birth interventions. Transition to Graduate Nursing Essay Paper   The article acknowledges that nurse midwives are advanced practice registered nurses who practice independently when providing maternity care to pregnant women. The article’s content is of particular interest since it underscores the fact that certified nurse-midwives are underused and yet they provide safe and effective care that is associated with fewer interventions when compared to physician-led care.

The article was sourced from PubMed database. The database has been available since 1996. It is an online resource that supports the search and retrieval of life sciences and biomedical literature that are focused on improving personal and global health. It is a free resource that contains abstracts and citations to literature. Although it does not include full text on publications, only offers abstracts and citations, it includes links to the full text. The links are to other databases such as PubMed Central or the publisher’s website. Also, it facilitates text searches in other National Library of Medicine (NLM) literature sources that include MEDLINE and Bookshelf (National Library of Medicine, 2019).

While the PubMed database contains a large amount of publications with large diversity, the search presented a time challenge. It was a rather inefficient and time-consuming exercise as there was a need to first identify the source before evaluating its relevance and quality. Still, the database was useful as it focuses only on health and biomedicine fields and related disciplines such as bioengineering, chemical sciences, life sciences and behavioral sciences. Besides that, there are tools for refining the search thus easing the process. In addition, the database presents links to other databases thereby presenting a larger pool of publications from which to conduct the search (National Library of Medicine, 2019). As such, the database would be useful for other nursing students.
