Nurse Informaticists

Technology in the healthcare arena continues to grow and nurse informaticists play a vital role in the evaluation, implementation and successful transition and education.  They are responsible for tailoring functionality and establishing end-user conditions and requirements (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2022).  Collaboration is key to remaining current and utilizing technology efficiently and effectively to yield the best patient care outcomes.  Our organization has an initial orientation for all new employees that includes training on our electronic medical record. Our Informatics nurses are available 24 hours 7 days a week for assistance and actively participate in many committees including nursing practice council, policies, infections prevention, emergency management, and leadership.  The voice of our nurse informaticists is important in bridging the gaps between nursing knowledge, technology and end results of patient outcomes. They provide vital input and can assist in improving workflows and processes.  In fact, a recent example includes my request for receiving an alert anytime a stool culture gets collected for a clostridium difficile test, so that I can review necessity of the order to potentially prevent unnecessary hospital acquired clostridium difficile infections.  Our Informaticists immediately organized a meeting with our vendor, our lead physician, chief nursing officer and myself to discuss options available.  Ultimately, we were able to achieve the request as well as a hard stop during the process of ordering so the physician would be required to review appropriate evidence based practice protocols before ordering.  The collaboration with our informaticists in my organization continues to grow with the increased advancement in technology.  All systems require a partnership of collaboration and knowledge sharing to implement and maintain successful standards of care (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2022).

Improvement Strategies

The increased advancements in technology and availability of data creates a stronger need for continued education and collaboration between nursing informatics, practitioners, and leadership.  A strategy that I believe would be beneficial is leaders encouraging the nurse informaticist to get actively involved in a professional organization, such as the American Nursing Informatics Association (ANIA).  The ANIA’s mission is to advance nursing informatics through education, research, and practice in all roles and settings placing high value on advocacy, inclusion, innovation, integrity and quality (ANIA, 2022).  Professional organizations provide networking with like professionals that share the same mission, vision and value and can promote sharing of ideas both failures and successes that can further support growth at different levels and facilities.  Professional organizations also offer events and educational resources to members to assist in keeping them up to date of new advancements in the field.  Another important strategy is increased support from leadership to build informaticists capabilities for collaboration and connect with them to ensure their needs are being met and allow for them to share their ideas on how to improve collaboration within the organization.   In fact, nurse executives are responsible for creation of the framework that allows for nurses and other experts to apply their knowledge, such as through the creation of a data culture, the development of data competencies and the establishment of data infrastructure and with a collaborative relationship between nurse informaticists and nurse executives new solutions to improve nursing process and patient care can emerge (Mosier, et.al., 2019).

Evolution of Nursing Informatics with the Emergence of new Technology

The emergence of new technology can promote improved patient outcomes, but can be dangerous without strong collaborative efforts, continued education, and support from leadership.  The overwhelming presence of technology at the clinical bedside has the power to become the strongest reference point that nurses use to inform, direct, interpret, evaluate, and understand nursing care but they also need to be aware of the potential for inadvertently dehumanizing the patient experience in their technology-laden practice environments (McGonigle & Masterian, 2022).  Our organization, like many other healthcare entities since the COVID-19 Pandemic, have relied heavily on the technological capabilities to continue to provide care to patients.  Our organization has suffered staffing crisis and have recently began discussion about tele-nursing.   Tele-nursing is a new concept and many fear such advancement, especially the bedside nurses.  Though, our executive leaders see great value in the support of tele-nursing for our current and new nurses.  In fact, tele-ICU nurse can provide significant value to tele-ICU programs by being available to participate in bedside collaboration, education or coaching opportunities especially for the novice ICU nurse and new graduates who lack the skills and immediate critical thinking abilities and may be uncomfortable speaking with physicians (Goran, 2012).   Technology can be frightening and the unknown can cause hesitation but practitioners must continue to strive to stay current with an eye to the future so they are implementing the best technologies to improve patient care (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2022).
